Stollen Bread

Stollen bread's history began in 14th-century Germany as a simple, tasteless Advent fasting bread (flour, oats, water, oil) meant as a Christmas offering, its shape symbolizing baby Jesus in swaddling clothes. A papal ban on dairy during Advent limited its richness, but 15th-century Saxon princes petitioned the Pope for permission to use butter, eventually leading to the rich, fruity, buttery.
